At The Majestic Restaurant, we work hard to keep this artform alive and provide a venue for some of the best Kansas City Jazz musicians to showcase their talents. Special appearances by vocalists David Basse and Deborah Brown, trumpet player Hermon Mehari and Chuck Haddix, the producer of KCUR-FMs Fish Fry. Kansas City jazz has inspired the creation of a museum and has been the subject of a feature-length film, Robert Altman’s 1996 Kansas City, and even a sentimental rock song, Eternal Kansas City by Van Morrison. Lonnie has traveled the globe performing and representing Kansas City Jazz at major jazz festivals and shows around the world. Boss Tom Pendergast kept the lawmen at bay while musicians honed their craft and created the truly American style of music known as Kansas City Jazz. Legendary performers like Count Basie and Charlie Parker pushed the envelope of the modern style in the jazz clubs and speakeasies of the jazz era. Vocalists Eboni Fondren, Lisa Henry and Deborah Brown, pianist John Beasley and saxophonist Bobby Watson will all make an appearance, and there’s a special treat for lovers, like myself, of A. Some of the most influential bebop artists, who were typically composer-performers, are alto sax player Charlie Parker tenor sax players Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and James Moody clarinet player Buddy DeFranco trumpeters Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie pianists Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk electric guita. It was Kansas City Jazz that marked the transition from the Big Band style to more modern styles like Bebop and Swing. The Kansas City sound invades popular culture Sinatra and Basie at the Sands, The Beatles record the song Jimmy Witherspoon with Jay McShann. Rod Fleeman, a mainstay of the Kansas City jazz scene and a longtime sideman, is out with his first album under his own name: 'Saturday Afternoon Live at Green Lady Lounge. Kansas City Jazz introduced elements of the blues to create legendary jam sessions that would last until the sun came up. That might be true, but it came of age in Kansas City.
